KEYNOTE
Dr. Gloria Balague Dr. Gloria Balague is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department of the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is a native of Barcelona, Spain, and has been a consultant for US Track and Field since 1989. Gloria has accompanied the team to Olympic and World Championships and continues her involvement both at the elite level as well as in the Coaches’ Education Program. Besides Track and Field, Gloria has worked with USA Gymnastics and USA Field Hockey and has been Keynote Speaker at the International Olympic Congress (Australia 2000), the European Conference in Sport Psychology (Denmark, 2003), and the South American Congress of Sport Psychology (Santiago, Chile, 2006 and Buenos Aires, Argentina 2010).

Creating Excellence

Ben Bishop Coaches the girls shot & discus at Edwardsville High School.  He also has had numerous state qualifiers in the shot & discus in 3A. The past two years he has coached the state champion in the shot put, Emmonnie Henderson. She was also the discus champion and took 3rd in 2010, He has created one of the top women’s throws programs in the state of Illinois.

Wayne Clark Terrific at coaching beginners,– “Sprint Relay Basics” and “Basic Hurdling.” He was the long-time winning coach at Zanesville HS in Ohio. Wayne understands that coaches need useful material they can use right away with their athletes, and he delivers plenty of great info.

Will Freeman Will Freeman has led the Pioneers to 27 Midwest Conference titles in cross country and track and field in his 29 years at Grinnell.  He has coached beginners to national champions while at Grinnell.  Freeman attended the University of Florida where he competed a highly successful pole vaulter. While at Florida, he won 5 SEC titles in the vault (3 indoors and two outdoors), won the Penn Relays vault, was  NCAA Div. 1 All-America and was a finalist at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

He is a former National Chairman for Coaching Education for the USA Track & Field and holds Level III certification as a coach and as a Level II instructor.   He currently is the Chair of the NCAA Track & Field Coaches Committee. A much sought-after clinician speaking at clinics both around the U.S. and internationally, he has also written four books, many articles and 19 training videos for coaches of all levels.  He has trained coaches and athletes throughout the US, in Canada, the Bahamas, and Africa.  Besides his duties as cross country and track coach, Freeman is an Associate Professor at Grinnell College and teaches popular courses in the Foundations of Sports Psychology and Wellness. He has been at Grinnell since 1980.  Freeman’s wife Evelyn is the highly successful women’s cross country and track coach at Grinnell.

Mike Garcia Mike Garcia is in his 32nd year of coaching track and field.  He is in his 22 year at Lanphier High School in Springfield where he is the head track and field coach along with being the head cross country coach. His athletes have won the high jump three times  and placed eight other times in the high jump. His Lanphier teams have earned three state trophies. He currently has a high jump DVD on sale with Championship.

Ken Helberg Ken has been the boys head track and field coach at Wheaton Warrenville South since 1988-89.  At the State Meet, his teams have been State Champions twice, Second once, Third once and Fourth twice.  In addition, Wheaton Warrenville South has been the DuPage Valley Conference Champions fourteen out of the last seventeen years.   He has had seven athletes place in the 400 at the State meet, two of them as State Champions, and eight 4 x 400 Relays place in the State meet, two as State Champions. Ken was inducted in the ITCCCA Hall of Fame in 2006.

Dan Iverson / Rob Harvey Coach Iverson and Coach Harvey both took home trophies this year and have years of success in both cross country and track and field. Both ran competitively at North Central college and have used their collegiate experiences to bring much success to the high-school level. So two of the best distance coaches in the state team up to share what they know.

Tim Johnson Tim Johnson former HS National record holder, NCAA All-American and US Olympic trials qualifier. He brings much talent, passion, experience, and teaching skill to the pole-vault. Thanks to Tim for helping us help our vaulters find their best.

Jeff Ohlson Coaches both guys & girls at Bureau Valley High School, Manlius, IL.  He has had numerous state qualifiers in the shot & discus for both guys & girls in 1A.  Jeff has built a successful throws program for both guys and girls with sustained success for both programs. Jeff is also the head football coach at Bureau Valley.

Monique Ryan A nationally recognized nutritionist with over twenty-five years of professional experience. Monique was a member of the Performance Enhancement Team for USA Triathlon, USA Cycling (Women’s Road Team), and Synchro Swimming USA up to the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. She has consulted for multiple seasons with the Timex Multisport Team, and the Chicago Fire Soccer Team. Monique has also consulted with professional baseball and basketball players, and team sport athletes competing at the high school and collegiate level. Monique is quoted frequently for sports nutrition articles and her comments have appeared in the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, Chicago Sun-Times, Runner’s World, Fitness, Men’s Journal, Men’s Health, Outside, and Oxygen among other publications.

Steve Silvey 561 All-America awards, 28 World Championships competitors, 15 World Championship medalists and 34 Olympians. Among the 11 Olympic medalists he's worked with, Samuel Matete and Calvin Davis won the silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the 400M hurdles in Atlanta in 1996. Olympic 4x400M relay gold medalists Lamont Smith (400M, 44.30) and Darnell Hall (400M, 44.34) were also under the tutelage of Silvey In 2005, Silvey was inducted into the National Junior College Track and Field Hall of Fame after becoming the all-time men's winningest coach with 15 national championships Start Pictures

Glenn Thompson Editor & founder of the Long & Strong Throwers Journal, the number one throwers periodical in the USA.  Glenn is also an accomplished masters thrower in the shot & discus having thrown the 16lb shot over 61 feet and the 2kg discus over 180’. Glenn also spends a large amount of time coaching many young  high school and college Pennsylvanian throwers.

 

Mike Tully Coach Mike Tully has studied peak performance for three decades, first as an international sports writer and then as a championship coach. Coach Tully covered Olympic games in Lake Placid, Los Angeles, Sarajevo and Seoul, as well as more than 100 consecutive World Series games. Now he takes the insights gained from the greatest athletes in the world and brings them into high school and college gyms.
